Cedar for appearance—or treated lumber for value
We would use full-thickness cedar boards for the finished beds if we can keep the entire garden near its $1,250 target. If cedar pricing forces cuts to fencing, soil, or drainage, we would choose properly labeled residential ground-contact treated lumber instead. Those parts protect the harvest more than premium wood.
How much lumber do two 3×8 beds need?
One 3×8-foot rectangle has 22 linear feet of perimeter. Two beds need 44 linear feet for each board course. A simple purchase plan for beds about 11 inches tall is six 8-foot 2×12 boards: four stay full length for the sides, and two are cut into four 3-foot ends. Add corner posts or interior stakes, and verify actual board dimensions before cutting.
Stacking two courses of 2×6 boards roughly doubles the board count and adds more seams and fasteners. On a slope, level each bed pad and brace the downhill side; do not ask the bed wall to act as a retaining wall for the whole hillside.

Cedar: best natural fit
Cedar offers natural decay resistance and looks at home beside a wooded garden. It can be left unfinished to weather naturally. We would favor sturdy 2-inch nominal boards over thin fence boards, then add corner posts and a center stake on each 8-foot side to control bowing from wet soil.
- Best for: a visible, long-term bed with a natural look.
- Watch for: species and grade differences hidden behind the word “cedar.”
- Our decision point: buy it only if it leaves enough budget for soil and wildlife protection.
Untreated pine or fir: cheapest today
Untreated softwood is easy to source and makes sense for a temporary bed or a first-season experiment. Constant soil contact and a damp, shaded edge work against it. Oregon State researchers reported severe decay in untreated raised beds by year six, while the treated beds in the same study remained mostly intact.
Modern treated lumber: what the evidence says
Current residential treated lumber is not the same product as old CCA-treated lumber. Oregon State Extension says common residential preservatives include copper azole, micronized copper azole, and alkaline copper quaternary. In its four-season copper-azole study, small increases in soil copper were limited to roughly the first inch beside the boards, stayed within natural soil ranges, and did not increase copper in the vegetables and herbs tested.
- Buy only new lumber labeled for residential, ground-contact use.
- Avoid railroad ties and unknown or reclaimed treated wood.
- Keep the end tag and follow its cut-end and handling directions.
- Use stainless steel or manufacturer-approved hot-dip galvanized fasteners.
- Wash hands after building and never burn treated scraps.
Composite boards: durable but not automatically structural
Composite boards resist rot, but many decking products are designed to span between closely spaced joists—not to hold wet soil across an unsupported 8-foot run. Use a product whose manufacturer permits raised-bed or ground-contact use, follow its support spacing, and include the cost of extra stakes or framing. For this project, the price and structural complexity make composite our fourth choice.
Fasteners, liners, and finishes
- Use exterior structural screws rated for the lumber treatment; ordinary interior screws can corrode or snap.
- A permeable fabric can help separate soil from a rough site, but do not wrap the entire bed in impermeable plastic and trap water.
- If applying a finish, rely on the actual product label—not a vague “natural” or “food safe” claim—and confirm it is intended for the planned exterior garden use.
- Inspect the downhill wall, corner joints, stakes, and drainage after winter freeze-thaw cycles.
