Escargots usually feel like something reserved for a French restaurant, which is why this box caught our attention. White Toque packs 12 very large Helix snails in their shells with garlic-and-parsley butter. They are imported from France and arrive in a small oven-ready aluminum tray.

The appeal is the contrast between the earthy, tender snails and all that hot, fragrant butter. The included tray is not glamorous, but it keeps the shells upright and makes the whole snack nearly effortless. We would buy them again—especially to keep in the freezer for a small appetizer that feels more special than the work involved.

What you need

How to prepare frozen escargots

  1. Heat the oven. Heat the oven to 430°F. Keep the escargots frozen until the oven is ready.
  2. Unpack carefully. Remove the outer packaging and plastic film. Set the included aluminum tray on a rimmed baking sheet, keeping every shell upright so the butter stays inside.
  3. Bake until bubbling. Bake for about 10 minutes, until the garlic-parsley butter is fully melted and bubbling.
  4. Warm the bread. Warm or lightly toast the bread during the last few minutes, watching it closely.
  5. Serve right away. Serve immediately with small forks or toothpicks and plenty of bread for the hot garlic butter. Handle the shells and tray carefully.
